Chapter 16

It had been quite an adventure and Bert wondered what it would be like working for a gangster. Well, he thought, with Nell for a wife, there’s a fat chance of that ever happening! When he and Nell opened the envelope that Victor Rossini had given Bert, they found five hundred dollars in it and Bert said, “You sure you wanted me to say no when Rossini asked me to work for him? We could be getting more envelopes like this just sitting on our backside’s limousine -sitting. Think how nice it would be to wear a mink coat to church on Sunday?”

“My mother used to say, ‘Only women with bald husbands wear fur coats.’ I’m perfectly content to wait until then, and by the look of this mop,” she said while fondly mussing up his hair, “that will probably never happen. I knew he was going to ask you to do more for him. You did say no, didn’t you?”

Kenneth, like his brother Bruce, had big brown eyes but Kenneth’s hair was much fairer than Bruce’s or Marion’s, and it was quite curly. When Nell learned that she would just have to take Kenneth to the store to have his picture taken, and that he wouldn’t have to be paraded in front of a lot of strangers, she consented to entering him.

She told Bert that she might even have a studio picture taken of all three children while she was there. When the day arrived to take the picture, she dressed them in their finest clothes, and was pleased when the photographer said he would take one of them all, but first he wanted to do Kenneth by himself. He then told her to take all his clothes off. She was shocked and almost refused but he pointed out that he was taking most of the babies that way. Baby Kenneth had his photo taken sitting naked while playing with a rubber duck. However, he was fully clad when the photographer took a picture of him with his brother and sister.

On the day of the contest, Maimie insisted that Nell go with her to see the results. Nell didn’t want to go, since she knew there must have
